A WORK SHADOWING AFTERNOON FOR PHOENIX ACADEMY POST-16 STUDENTS AT A+E NETWORKS

On Tuesday 14th November, 10 post-16 students from Phoenix Academy immersed themselves in the work of a TV company at a work shadowing session at the A+E Networks office in Hammersmith, West London.

Students were accompanied by education staff, Maxine Gordon and Furell O’Tubu, and were welcomed to the session by A+E’s Managing Director, Dean Possenniskie.

This was an exciting opportunity for these students to sample the workplace in a busy, multinational media corporation and gave them a taster of a selection of careers in the media.

Students were split into two groups and taken on a tour of the building and then came back for further sessions with Human Resources and Marketing and Comms to look at Interview Techniques and Events. After this, students were split into smaller groups for the work shadowing activity, this included input from Digital and Social, Operations, Finance, and Ad Sales.

Staff and students were energised and enthused by this event which will now lead to further partnership working and a number of A+E employees have already signed up to continue to support students in the Hammersmith area, through Mentoring, Reading Partners and further work shadowing options.

Comments from students echoed the success of this event:

Each member beautifully outlined their roles

I now understand the different aspects of the A+E Network

This was such a wonderful experience. It amazed me how people operate in companies, creative calm work ethic.

I think my experience was very valuable and I enjoyed learning about different people’s roles.

I’ve had the best time and hope to come back soon.

Thank you to staff and students at Phoenix for their participation and a huge thank you to Staff at A+E, particularly Sarah Williams-Robbins and Rita Ruparelia for their hard work in making this event happen.
